To be technical, Keith Emerson is playing the song as it was originally recorded by Meade Lux Lewis. He isn’t improvising at all. Oscar Peterson is doing improvisational jamming based on the music pattern. Both are exceptional in their own way. This isn’t a piano duel at all, just 2 masters relishing a blues classic. Peace.

it looks like Oscar is more relaxed than Keith. The both play fantastic, but Oscar makes it look very easy :P

anything else I can do for you today?

  5. Miloshevits / May 4 2011

@spamfighter Even though i find it hard to believe you, you are totally right about about Oscar. He wouldn’t play this unless he knew exactly what he was in for.

    @spamfighter

A lot of people blowing smoke here. Allow me to say this. I knew Oscar Peterson. I considered him a friend, and I assume he considered me a friend. I had a concert hall named after him. So, perhaps I knew him well enough to say this: Oscar *never* played with sub-par musicians. Ever. if it wasn’t good enough, he wouldn’t play. And so, if he played with Keith Emerson, it was because he though well enough of him as a musician to do so. Good enough for OP, good enough for me.

A comparison between Oscar Peterson and Keith Emerson is just like a comparison between a Harley Davidson and a Spongebob three wheel bicycle.
Now call me a “snob” and get back to your Clayderman’s records.

Oscar and his guys swing like crazy

did you noticed that keith arranged the piece and direct it WHILE playing? do you realized he composed the whole thing, thinking of spaces for oscar improvisation? do you realize keith’s drummer here is palmer, and which comparison can be mad between a prog drummer and a jazz one? oscar was a great pianist and improvisator but not nearly as complete as keith, you should accept that music is done with composition and not just with that jazzy approach. THAT SAID, THEY’RE BOTH AMAZING.

  19. Sordel / May 5 2011

There’s no use arguing which of the two is better on the basis of this video because OP is taking the improv spots and KE is maintaining the head. It’s a great meeting, not a duel.

  20. sigmayacht / May 5 2011

don’t know why you could really compare them. Both are really good. Oscar is a master of what he does, as is Keith. I prefer Oscar, and his improvisation is more interesting and viaried to me but must admit that keith is good.

    Menos Emerson, menos.

Now, before everyone sends me death threats for being long-winded and offending everyone, repeat after me:

WHY ARE WE AT EACH OTHER’S THROATS. WE SHOULD JOIN FORCES AND UNDO THE DAMAGE DONE BY HANNAH MONTANA, before she sets off an appocalypse.

Both were displaying their own genius without stepping on any toes. I think both are pretty humble. Both were showing each other respect. Both are worthy of respect. Many modern musicians have been influenced by both of them. Emerson was probably influenced directly by Peterson. I doubt Peterson felt like this was just charity either. I think he was known for his humble nature and open mind. He also collaborated with Classical musicians.

..with a lot of great pre-arranged ideas that he himself composed. Emerson is a composer who was partially responsible for the creation of an entirely new genre of music (Progressive Rock), which is taken very seriously by musicians who don’t actually play it themselves. Emerson is Jazz influenced, BUT isn’t a master of the language of Jazz improvisation, which takes a lifetime of dedication, experience, and a natural gift to master.

Few people even fantasize that they’ll ever play as well as him. Nobody in the world could be said to really play “better”. BUT, he’s not a great composer, which takes a lifetime of dedication, experience, and a natural gift to master.

Emerson is a Rock-Classical-Jazz-performer-composer who influenced thousands of musicians (in all genres) to expand their ears and look beyond set notions of genre, displaying his diversity and playing solid very traditional honky tonk piano…
